Holy shit, what a fiasco for John McCain.
It turns out that the image behind John McCain for the first few minutes of the biggest speech of his lifetime was a mistake. An error. A screwup. A symbolic metaphor.
According to an article in the Los Angeles Times, the image is not that of a large mansion (as I had thought it to be), but rather of Walter Reed. This makes sense: John McCain was an injured war veteran and much of his speech was going to focus on his experi . . . oh, wait. Not THAT Walter Reed. A different one.
The image was of Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood.
According to the LAT, “The changing image-screen was linked to the American thematics of the speech and the public school was simply part of it,” said spokesman Tucker Bounds. You may remember Tucker Bounds from a previous post in which a CNN mid-day anchor excoriated Bounds on national television.
I’m starting to think that Tucker Bounds is kind of an idiot. He is, after all, named Tucker Bounds; the kind of name you give to someone you don’t expect very much out of in this world.
In the rare event that you take Mr. Bounds at his word, I’ll remind you that this was the image that opened McCain’s speech, and remained there for a good long while. McCain talked about education for quite a long time, but it sure as hell wasn’t in favor of public schools!
