While it’s true that Palin’s daughter is not fodder for public scrutiny, I think it is entirely fair to evaluate the public’s reaction to this. In this case, the evangelicals are “over the moon” about Palin’s new baby.
That’s right. They’re happy. Over the moon. Elated.
I can’t make this shit up, people.
According to a CNN article that appeared late last night, “key evangelical leaders rallied to Sarah Palin’s support Monday amid news that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, was having a child. Sarah Palin confirmed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant” Before, they were excited about her, with the Down syndrome baby,” conservative, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist said. “But now with this, they are over the moon. It reinforces the fact that this family lives its pro-life values.”
First, fuck you Grover Norquist. That was a horrible thing to say. If I had a child with special needs, I’d take your moral righteousness and shove it straight up your ass. People don’t get excited about children with special needs. Supportive? Yes. Respectful? Yes. Excited? Fuck you, Grover.
Second, I’m sure you think that I made up the quote and/or text of this article, but I encourage you to verify that this is in fact the exact text of the CNN article at http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/01/palin.evangelicals/index.html.
Her daughter’s private life aside, Palin’s newfound supporters seem a little paradoxical. For decades we have heard nothing but fire and brimstone against the evils of pre-marital sex (and in this case, unprotected sex as well). They have overwhelmingly blocked the distribution of condoms in schools, stood in illogical opposition to an HPV vaccine that could prevent cancer (because it might give girls the idea that they can now have pre-marital sex), and have pushed with all their might against any sort of sex education in our nation’s classrooms.
Condoms in schools = bad.
HPV vaccine for girls to prevent ovarian cancer = bad.
Sex education in our nation’s classrooms = bad
17 year old girl who gets preganant because of unprotected, uninformed, and unvaccinated sex = ‘over the moon’
So how come they are over the moon about this most recent baby bump? How have they so easily dismissed the cause in favor of the effect? Where is all the national protesting and public outcry about glamorizing teen pregnancy?
More importantly, how can the evangelical community simultanesouly call Jamie Lynn Spears is a whore and Bristol Palin an angel?
If Palin’s daughter can get pregnant despite having a conservative, evangelical, pro-life, pro-gun, pro-moose meat family – and if evangelicals are going to celebrate her for keeping the baby without blinking an eye as to the cause – then I think it’s time that the national church politely and quitely steps away from their self-imposed moral leadership on sex education, HPV vacccines, and condoms in schools.
. . . and if you think there is no double-standard in the media between Jamie Lynn Spears and Bristol Palin, I would HIGHLY encourage you to read this sickeningly sweet article: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/republican_race/2008/09/01/2008-09-01_bristol_palins_pregnancy_was_an_open_sec.html
. . . and ask yourself whether JLS would get such favorable treatment.
